Author Matt Salter Nova Ukraine’s latest investment in strong, modern healthcare systems has arrived! Lviv First Medical Association has received a shipment of protective X-ray aprons and collars. These tools keep patients and caregivers safe during procedures requiring X-ray imaging, empowering healthcare workers to give patients top-quality diagnosis, treatment, and care. The new aprons and collars protect patients and healthcare workers from X-ray overexposure in video urodynamics, the process of identifying and treating potentially deadly issues of the urinary system and bladder. It calls for specialists to stay by a patient’s side from the beginning of the imaging process to the end of the procedure. Long-term, hands-on care like this produces the best outcomes, but without protective gear, it risks exposing patients and doctors to dangerous levels of radiation. With the new gear, doctors in Ukraine can deliver best-in-class diagnosis and treatment, improving current and future outcomes across the national healthcare system.

GDANSK, Poland–Nova Ukraine today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ukrainian Ministry of Culture to solidify their collaboration to protect and promote Ukrainian cultural heritage. UN reports confirm that hundreds of innocent civilians, including many children, have been killed and over 1,300 injured in just the first three months of 2025. Not a single day in March passed without an attack harming civilians. Nearly 13 million people in Ukraine urgently need humanitarian assistance, and more than 10 million have been forced to flee their homes. Families face impossible decisions daily – stay amidst relentless shelling, without reliable access to heat, water, and electricity, or risk everything by fleeing their homes in search of safety.

Ukraine isn’t waiting for peace to build its future—it’s building it right now. This was how Nick Bilogorskiy, Nova Ukraine’s Founder, described the nation’s technological progress at “The Power of Innovation: Ukraine’s Key to the Future” panel in Davos, Switzerland, this January. The panel, co-hosted by Nova Ukraine and Razom for Ukraine, focused on how Ukraine’s resilience and creativity are driving global change. Nova Ukraine’s strategic vision has always been focused on education as a path to meaningful innovation. As Nick Bilogorskiy shared: “What fuels this progress is a strong foundation in tech education. I am myself a product of a Ukrainian math school, and at Nova Ukraine, we’ve recognized since 2014 that the flourishing nation relies on education. We’ve championed STEM initiatives to equip young Ukrainians with the tools to solve tomorrow’s problems. We are modernizing classrooms, publishing books, creating STEM resources, and bridging gaps in tech accessibility for women and veterans. The full-scale invasion has disrupted education, leaving two-thirds of children in front-line areas unable to attend school. To address this, Nova Ukraine partnered with the Ministry of Education to provide remote learning opportunities and deliver digital devices, ensuring children can continue learning despite the war.” Ukraine’s innovation—in AI, drone technology, software, and countless other fields—doesn’t only support Ukrainians but provides unprecedented opportunities for the entire global community. “I can’t be running back and forth forever between grief and high delight,” wrote J.D. Salinger, in a characteristic musing on the absurd tensions of human life. Had he seen documentary film Porcelain War (directors Slava Leontyev and Brendan Bellomo), and had he met the film's stars as I had the rare opportunity to do, I wonder if the choice away from grief might have become a bit more defined for him. I don’t think I have ever met a person so clear-sighted about doing good through unchosen violence during a time of evil as Slava Leontyev. It’s one of the eternal questions begged by the film: does this kind of goodness only become visible—can it only exist—in the face of such a depth of depravity as Putin’s invasion of Ukraine (and if so, what does that say about human life)? Porcelain War doesn’t answer those questions, of course—but it does thoroughly answer some others. Slava and his wife Anya Stasenko, both porcelain artists, and Slava now a former Ukrainian Special Forces soldier who trains civilians to fight on the front lines, have some messages they would like the rest of the world to receive loud and clear. “Evil exists,” for one, as Slava tells us plainly from his home just outside Kharkiv. It is evil that he and the Ukrainian forces are fighting, for another. And for a third, evil will not stop itself. “It will keep pushing,” and if Ukrainians don’t effectively stop this one, it will reach all the way to us. We know this already. We don’t seem to learn too well, collectively, across history. And it’s just this line of thinking that makes it so easy to run toward grief, to lament the world and its sufferings as they unfold over and over again. But on the other side of that same coin that is melting in the crucible of the Ukraine war, it’s exactly this kind of frustrated, detached grieving that meeting Anya and Slava has made it impossible to do. When the people at the center of the fight—their homes crushed, families torn, weapons in their porcelain-painting hands—when those very people tell you from the core of their being that they know why they are fighting, that there is a reason never to stop, that there is a goodness that they absolutely know is worth preserving—it becomes impossible to doubt that. There are very few evident answers in life. You will find one or two in Porcelain War.
Among the foremost duties of Nova Ukraine is the funding and provision of critical emergency equipment in Ukraine, whether for general medical support, civilian rescue operations, or other humanitarian initiatives. A recent demonstration of this priority included our delivery of protective helmets for first responders who work arduously in hazardous conditions in the Donetsk, Sumy, and Kirovohrad regions. Gear such as helmets is especially vital for these rescuers as they face the threat of enemy shelling and rocket attacks prevalent in their areas of duty while carrying out critical duties—extinguishing fires, retrieving survivors from rubble, and evacuating civilians from hostile areas, among many other responsibilities. The recipients of these helmets were first responders from the State Emergency Service (SES), who play a critical role in clearing debris following russian strikes, rescuing survivors, and coordinating emergency operations. Providing them with essential protective gear ensures their safety and enables them to continue their lifesaving work for Ukraine’s most vulnerable communities. In addition to protective gear, Nova Ukraine is dedicated to supplying medical kits, trauma supplies, and other emergency resources to rescue workers and doctors alike. Through projects such as Ukraine Without Pain managed in collaboration with the Ukrainian Ministry of Health, for instance, we continue to establish strong, reliable medical networks across Ukraine capable of operating under extraordinary circumstances. This February, Nova Ukraine is pleased to support the exhibition of the esteemed contemporary Ukrainian artist, Ivan Marchuk. From February 11 through February 24, over 60 of Marchuk’s unique works will be featured at the Palazzo della Cancelleria in the historic Italian city of Rome. Furthermore, an inauguration ceremony for this exhibition will be taking place the day before opening on February 10, 2025. Ivan Marchuk is known for his use and development of the artistic technique of plaiting, which he employs to weave the human eye through his complex and magical Ukrainian landscapes and portraits. With his works previously featured in over 200 solo exhibitions on 5 continents around the world, Ivan Marchuk is a celebrated maestro and an important contributor to modern-day Ukrainian art and culture. Exhibition organizer, Weronika Marczuk, highlights Marchuk’s significance by stating his art is “an opportunity to feel the depth of the Ukrainian soul, its resilience and inexhaustible potential” in which “one can understand where Ukrainians draw their strength from today.” As the third year of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine approaches, Marchuk’s art remains ever-relevant as a testament to the Ukrainian people’s strength of character through the adversities of wartime. In partnership with Nova Ukraine, this celebration of Marchuk’s work was made possible thanks to The Friends of Ukraine Organization and with the cooperation of Ambassador Andrii Yurash from the Embassy of Ukraine to the Holy See of the Order of Malta. By reallocating $500,000 in eligible unrestricted funds, Nova Ukraine aims to stabilize critical services and mitigate the potential setbacks caused by a funding gap. By acting now, Nova Ukraine reaffirms its commitment to protecting at-risk communities and preserving progress made by local NGOs on the ground. “As many times before, Nova Ukraine is stepping in to provide support when governments are unable to,” said Dr. Igor L. Markov, Board Director at Nova Ukraine. “Our bridge funding for already-running projects in Ukraine vetted by USAID will allow them to not shut their doors but maintain operations until their frozen funding resumes. November 24, 2024 Since the start of the full-scale invasion, many Ukrainian youth have experienced multiple educational setbacks that arose from wartime and the end of the pandemic. Therefore, supporting education has become a key issue and is one of Nova Ukraine’s most important projects. Notably, one of the problems Ukrainian educators face is that many of the vital learning materials available to Ukrainian children are written in russian, by russian authors. Original books of Ukrainian origin, especially featuring STEM-based content are scarce and difficult to find. According to mathematical physicist, Iryna Yehorchenko, less than ten Ukranian books for mathematical education have been published since 1991 for children ages eight and above. Moreover, similar books written in Ukrainian for older children (ages 14 and above) are entirely nonexistent. Despite many years of consistent efforts from academics like Yehorchenko, publishers have strayed from creating and putting out such content. For Ukrainian educators trying to encourage young minds towards STEM subjects, this gap in resources makes the task even more difficult. As such, we have made it our mission at Nova Ukraine to inspire children and eliminate these barriers of accessibility through the Nova Ukraine Book Series, and we are proud to announce the publication of the first book of this series, Був Cобі Один by the Ukrainian author Alyona Shynkarenko. Був Cобі Один translates to “There Was One”, its title showcasing a lighthearted play on words that conveys the book’s main content, a mathematical fairytale featuring the numbers 0 through 9 as the main characters.
