McKee traveled to Odesa and Mykolaiv to meet the people and organizations living that belief: Ukrainians leading recovery in their own communities, supported by partnerships that last.

Dear Friend, This September marked a milestone for Nova Ukraine: we had a strong presence at the United Nations General Assembly events for the first time. Together with global partners, we put Ukraine’s children and education at the heart of the world’s agenda. At the same time, Ukrainian cities and towns endured some of the heaviest strikes of the war, with nearly 600 drones and 48 missiles launched in one night across multiple cities. Families hid in shelters, schools were disrupted, and power outages swept through entire regions. Because childhood cannot wait for peace, with your help, we are healing lives, rebuilding systems, empowering communities, and advocating for Ukraine’s future.

On June 17, Kyiv endured the largest attack in over a year. More than 440 drones and 32 missiles struck across Ukraine, killing dozens and injuring many more. In Kyiv, a missile hit a nine-story apartment building, killing at least 28 civilians and injuring over 130. The russian regime’s actions marked a harsh escalation—compelling us, yet again, to report that this was “the largest attack of the year.” Still, people endure. Children still gather for summer camps. Mothers continue to care for entire families while their partners defend Ukraine. First responders keep supporting communities. Doctors keep saving lives. Dear Friends, The humanitarian crisis in Ukraine continues to escalate due to russia’s ongoing aggression. Despite diplomatic efforts to secure peace, russia's relentless attacks on Ukrainian cities have resulted in significant civilian casualties and widespread destruction. UN reports confirm that hundreds of innocent civilians, including many children, have been killed and over 1,300 injured in just the first three months of 2025. Not a single day in March passed without an attack harming civilians. Nearly 13 million people in Ukraine urgently need humanitarian assistance, and more than 10 million have been forced to flee their homes. Families face impossible decisions daily – stay amidst relentless shelling, without reliable access to heat, water, and electricity, or risk everything by fleeing their homes in search of safety.

This emergency action seeks to keep essential services operational, ensuring that those most at risk continue receiving support and preventing irreversible setbacks until funding resumes. The unexpected pause of foreign assistance may stall key projects, leaving vulnerable populations at risk. By reallocating $500,000 in eligible unrestricted funds, Nova Ukraine aims to stabilize critical services and mitigate the potential setbacks caused by a funding gap. By acting now, Nova Ukraine reaffirms its commitment to protecting at-risk communities and preserving progress made by local NGOs on the ground. “As many times before, Nova Ukraine is stepping in to provide support when governments are unable to,” said Dr. Igor L. Markov, Board Director at Nova Ukraine. “Our bridge funding for already-running projects in Ukraine vetted by USAID will allow them to not shut their doors but maintain operations until their frozen funding resumes. This will lessen disruption and hardship for vulnerable people who depend on aid and services.”
