Support Ukraine in the Face of Historical and Current Oppression

By Sofiia Tiapkina As Ukraine commemorates the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor genocide, we see history painfully repeating itself. russia’s brutal war in Ukraine makes the echoes of the past resonate in the present, as Ukraine battles not only for its survival but also for the preservation of its national identity. The haunting similarities between the Stalinist methods during the Holodomor and those employed by Putin in the ongoing war underscore the urgent need for global support. The 1932-1933 Holodomor genocide remains a painful chapter in Ukrainian history. The Soviet authorities ordered the collectivization of agriculture, placing impossibly high grain quotas on the Ukrainian peasant farmers. When these quotas proved unattainable, the regime increased its efforts to seize every last bit of grain. The result was a manufactured famine that claimed the lives of millions of Ukrainians. At the same time, the USSR repressed Ukrainian culture, targeting writers and cultural leaders who spoke up about Holodomor – decades of forced silence followed as the USSR denied the terror famine. Ninety years have passed, and Ukraine is once again fighting for its right to exist. The russian regime is subjecting the Ukrainian civilians to shelling, hunger, cold, and deportations. russia is directly employing Stalinist tactics of the Holodomor and stealing Ukrainian grain to gain revenue for putin’s war machine. Satellites have tracked russia’s smuggling of over 15 million tons of Ukrainian grain from the temporarily occupied regions of Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, and Luhansk. The goal remains the same — to starve Ukrainians, obliterate their statehood, and continue the cycle of silence and violence. The stark parallels between historical oppression and the ongoing war highlight Ukrainians’ endurance in the face of adversity.

Be the Warmth

Join Us in Warming Lives This Winter -- Your Support is Crucial! Ukraine is bracing for its second tough winter of the full-scale invasion with a severely damaged energy infrastructure. Despite massive repairs to the energy system, it remains fragile after the many months of russian strikes. As a result, millions of Ukrainian families are bracing for power outages. Many communities are preparing for the cold temperatures and hardships of regular blackouts, compounded by damaged homes, unstable electrical grid, and unreliable gas supply. In the winter, temperatures in Ukraine can drop from 35°F to a frigid -4°F, and this is particularly concerning for the large number of displaced Ukrainians in the eastern and central regions. The energy crisis poses significant risks, but your support makes resilience possible.

Water for Mykolaiv

Water for Mykolaiv

On September 15, 2023, a free water supply station for local residents was launched in Mykolaiv, Ukraine. This project comes amidst the severe drinking water shortage caused by the ongoing shelling of critical civilian infrastructure in the region by russian forces. The drinking water situation in the Mykolaiv region is among the most critical in the country, as contamination levels have far exceeded the normal. The city’s water grid suffered extensive damage in April 2022 when russians targeted the two main pipelines that provided the city with fresh water from the Dnipro River. Authorities had to resort to emergency measures using technical water (non-potable) from a nearby estuary. Since then, the grid has been partially repaired, but tap water is still unusable for drinking or cooking. Locals say that even taking a shower with their tap water is barely possible, as it leaves severe burns on the skin. In November 2022, The Washington Post reported that "On any given day, at least 10 percent of the city is without even technical water because of broken pipes" which leaves the city with no heating, even in freezing temperatures. After almost a year, the situation has not changed much, and has worsened. Due to the poor quality of the water, the pipes and pumps that are critical for supplying water to the city are seriously corroded and require almost constant maintenance. The consequences of the explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station has also added to the stress the infrastructure is under. Given that, the city still heavily relies on outside shipments providing locals with clean water to make sure that, among other things, food production and medical facilities can continue working without interruptions. City officials claim that there are currently no alternatives to this, as replacing the destroyed infrastructure during hostilities is impossible, and efforts to reach an agreement with the russians to repair the system failed. For now, locals have to rely on several clean water stations in the city provided by Red Cross and other international organizations. Lidia, a resident of Mykolaiv, says that trips to these mobile water supply stations have become a part of their daily routine. “Not everyone has a car, so it's like a golden rule: after work, we carry bottles and bring the water we need for basic daily needs. Generally, we can only carry two 5-liter bottles at a time, unless we need to go grocery shopping or do something extra. In such cases, we are limited to only one bottle.”

Nova Ukraine Cohosts Ukraine Action Summit Coalition

Since September 2022, the Ukraine Action Summit convenes biannually in Washington, DC. The Summit allows congressional constituents from all states to meet with their elected representatives and senators, and also includes networking events for organizations that support Ukraine. As a member of the American Coalition for Ukraine, Nova Ukraine is pleased to announce the fourth Summit, slated for April 13-16, 2024. This year, amidst our continued efforts, we are particularly encouraged by the significant representation from the California delegation, demonstrating broad and diverse support for Ukraine that spans from coast to coast. At the last gathering (October 22-24, 2023), over 450 participants from 34 states advocated for Ukraine in 220 congressional meetings and discussed the current situation in Ukraine in three days of expert panel sessions. Networking opportunities extended to dinners and a lively closing reception at Ukraine House. During this time, Summit participants forged vital connections and new friendships. Amidst singing the national anthem, we unveiled the world’s largest Ukrainian flag on the National Mall, requiring over 100 people. The message in America’s capital was resoundingly clear: Ukrainian victory is essential for all. These over 450 advocates, representing the voice of many, expressed our gratitude for the American people’s support through funding, military, and refugee assistance, and reinforced the crucial message that continued support for Ukraine is indispensable for maintaining global security and ensuring sustainable peace. How You Can Help The Ukraine Action Summit offers a powerful platform to amplify your voice alongside like-minded individuals. Through our collective advocacy, we convey a consistent message: the importance of continued support for Ukraine, which is essential not only for the Ukrainian people but for preserving democracy worldwide. Nova Ukraine looks forward to welcoming you in DC, where we will continue to stand united for Ukraine, advocating for a future marked by peace, security, and freedom.

Invictus Games: A Look into Ukraine’s Growing Prosthetics Needs

By Sofiia Tiapkina The Invictus Games Team Ukraine competed in the Invictus Games Düsseldorf 2023 earlier in September. These 25 active-duty soldiers and veterans injured in combat since the russian invasion in 2014 have shown the world the unconquerable and invincible Ukrainian spirit. Together with our partner Protez Hub, Nova Ukraine provided the necessary equipment to one team member, Bohdan Yarotsky. Bohdan’s story brings to light the current prosthetics industry in Ukraine. As russia continues its brutal war, Ukraine’s prosthetics industry has skyrocketed. An estimated 20,000 to 50,000 Ukrainian soldiers and civilians underwent at least one amputation, and the numbers keep growing. Our partner, Protez Hub, emerged as a lead prosthetics service focusing on pre-prosthetic rehabilitation, testing prosthetic sockets, and improved communication between healthcare professionals and patients. They have created a network of Ukrainian specialists working with their foreign colleagues, a massive information hub for professionals and patients alike, as well as hotline and consultations for amputees. Yet, despite the impressive successes in the face of russian violence, Ukraine’s prosthetics industry experiences challenges along its path to improvement. Over the course of the war, our country became an unwilling testing ground for low-quality or experimental prosthetic devices and solutions. It is crucial for the international community to support trustworthy initiatives such as Protez Hub and thus prevent war victims from falling prey to fraud. Across the entire industry, there is a continued need for more funding. Nova Ukraine helps fund specialized prosthetics such as the ones Bohdan Yarotsky used when competing in the Invictus Games earlier this month.

A Presidential Award, a Team Thank You

President Zelenskyy recently awarded Ostap Korkuna, Co-Chairman of Nova Ukraine, the Order of Merit III degree for his work at Nova Ukraine. This incredible honor is given for "a significant contribution to the strengthening of interstate cooperation, supporting the state sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, and the popularization of the Ukraine state in the world." With great humility and sincere gratitude, Ostap would like to share this recognition with each volunteer, each donor, each partner and each ambassador whose work has helped Ukraine stand strong. In Ostap’s eyes, this award belongs to all of us. Many of our volunteers have risked their lives delivering crucial supplies wherever needed, even in occupied territories. Others of us have given up livelihoods or precious free time to source goods and coordinate the logistics for delivery of generators, medications, technological devices, drinking water, etc. Still others have focused on providing the human touch by setting up family rooms at train stations, creating hands-on after-school programs, and providing shelter and care for animals. And finally, there are some of us who work to evacuate and resettle refugees at welcoming places around the world. When you add it all up, our collective work makes a very long list. Nevertheless, as the war drags on, there are moments when each of us finds ourselves wondering if our work continues to make any measurable difference. President Zelenskyy’s merit award most definitely assures that we are making an impact. Ukraine’s families, its elderly, its mentally or physically disabled and the internally displaced are directly benefiting by the tireless efforts we make to improve their lives.

Ukraine Independence Day 2023 Celebration: Important Events

Ukrainian Independence Day is a celebration of resilience, unity, and national pride. This year, the Nova Ukraine team, representing the heart and spirit of the Ukrainian diaspora, embarked on a series of engagements across California and beyond. Their activities—from symbolic acts of unity at Mission Peak and Capitol Hill to high-level diplomatic ceremonies in San Francisco and Santa Clara—underscored the significance of the Ukrainian community abroad and its profound integration into local cultures. On August 23, Nova Ukraine director Nick Bilogorskiy was among the dozens of people hiking to Mission Peak, where the group placed several Ukrainian flags. Meanwhile, Nova Ukraine’s Vlad Dergunov, along with many others, joined together for a celebratory run on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. On August 24, Nova Ukraine directors Michael Simbirsky, Igor Markov, and Nick Bilogorskiy, joined by his wife Anna, met with San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan. Mayor Mahan presented the San Jose City Council proclamation on occasion of Ukraine’s Independence Day. Ukrainian National Women’s League of America representatives and Anna Zaychenko of Consulate General of Ukraine also attended the meeting. Later in the day, Igor Markov, Nick and Anna Bilogorskiy, as well as Rodion Yaryy and Larisa Naduhovskaya, attended the flag-raising ceremony and reception at the San Francisco City Hall with Mayor London Breed, MP Halyna Yanchenko, and Consul General Kushneryk. Additionally, the reception was attended by representatives of Ukrainian-American Coordinating Council, Leleka, and other Ukrainian organizations, as well as foreign diplomats.

Solar Energy for Educational Institutions – Pilot Project in Chernihiv

Our pilot project involves a school located in Chernihiv. The city endured a month-long occupation at the onset of the Russian invasion. Throughout this period, the school became a steadfast refuge for residents, offering safety and saving lives. Following the city's liberation, the school resumed its operations for students and teachers. However, persistent power outages have since disrupted the educational process. We chose to install an alternative power solution using solar panels, accompanied by the necessary set of equipment. This allows the school to operate during power outages, ensuring continuity until centralized electricity is restored. Amidst this situation, our pilot project emphasized the transformative role of solar energy in maintaining crucial services and providing a sanctuary. We plan to continue building our "Resilient Communities" initiative, aiming to fortify urban and rural infrastructures with solar panels, making long-lasting effects on our communities.

Ukraine’s Amputee Numbers Surge, Echoing World War I Era

Fighting at Ukrainian battlefields is taking a toll. The number of amputees in Ukraine has now reached the scale seen in the aftermath of World War I when mass use of field artillery left numerous soldiers on all sides without limbs. As a result of the war, an estimated 20,000 to 50,000 Ukrainians have had to undergo amputations, often losing one or more limbs. After 500 days of brutal fighting, this once-unimaginable statistic has become a stark and painful reality. The lives of many men and women have been forever altered, their dreams disrupted, and their futures and livelihoods cast into uncertainty. Our Partnership with Protez Hub Foundation Nova Ukraine is proud to collaborate with the Protez Hub Foundation, an organization championing the development of the limb prosthetics industry in Ukraine. Together, we aim to provide a comprehensive resource for everything related to limb prosthetics in Ukraine, from essential information for the injured to a list of service providers and free educational courses for professionals.
