Centers of Excellence in Rehabilitation Training for Healthcare Professionals

Nova Ukraine has helped the Ministry of Health in Ukraine launch seven clinical multidisciplinary rehabilitation Centers of Excellence to date. These hubs of modern rehabilitation provide intensive training for healthcare teams. They also serve to introduce evidence-based rehabilitation methods and foster a professional network of practitioners. Since October 2023, over 50 training events have been held for teams from 42 rehabilitation departments. These sessions were supported by WHO Ukraine and the War Trauma Rehabilitation project implemented by the Patients of Ukraine charitable foundation, with support from the Embassy of Switzerland in Ukraine, the EU Delegation to Ukraine, and Nova Ukraine. In May 2025, a new three-month training cycle was launched at the same three centers, marking the first of three cycles planned for the year. Each center will train four teams of five specialists, meaning 180 professionals across 36 teams will complete hands-on, evidence-based training by year-end. Training focuses on team-based rehabilitation work with patients across various diagnoses during acute and post-acute phases. The program includes introductory meetings with team members and facility administrators, in-person sessions, weekly online case presentations, and pre- and post-training tests to assess learning. Three months after completing the cycle, teams will rejoin virtually to report on progress and share their action plans for improving rehabilitation services based on short-term goals set during training.

June Newsletter

On June 17, Kyiv endured the largest attack in over a year. More than 440 drones and 32 missiles struck across Ukraine, killing dozens and injuring many more. In Kyiv, a missile hit a nine-story apartment building, killing at least 28 civilians and injuring over 130. The russian regime’s actions marked a harsh escalation—compelling us, yet again, to report that this was “the largest attack of the year.” Still, people endure. Children still gather for summer camps. Mothers continue to care for entire families while their partners defend Ukraine. First responders keep supporting communities. Doctors keep saving lives. Teachers keep showing up online, in bunkers, and wherever they are needed. Nova Ukraine stands with the people of Ukraine, and YOU make our work possible. The Power of Two: Healing In Times Of War, Together

As of February 2025, Ukraine has recorded over 390,000 cases of wounded soldiers, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Many of these defenders return to the front after recovering—some more than once—so the actual number of individuals wounded is lower, but the toll remains staggering. Thousands return home with life-altering injuries that reshape not only their futures, but the lives of their families as well. Having gone through hospitals, physical rehabilitation programs, and painful adjustments to a new reality, the veterans are also dealing with invisible wounds of psychological trauma, guilt, and disconnection. They come home as heroes, but the war doesn’t automatically go away. It lingers in the silent distance between them and the people they love. For many, reintegration is a battle of its own. Relationships suffer. Connections break. Emotional walls go up. People who once knew how to reach and support each other now feel confused and isolated. The statistics are sobering: one in three military marriages ends after demobilization, and nearly one in five veterans lives alone. These breakdowns often stem from the emotional trauma of war, combined with the lack of adequate family-centered support. In fact, 70% of surveyed veterans said they need access to rehabilitation with their children and loved ones, and nearly 33% wished for joint psychological programs—yet as of early 2024, only 4.3% had access to them. Viktoriia Drach, the Nova director in Ukraine, highlighted that this issue is not unique to Ukraine:

Bring Kids Back: Reuniting Ukraine’s Stolen Children

June 8 is National Children’s Day—a day meant to celebrate childhood, family, and the promise of a safe future. But for tens of thousands of Ukrainian children, that future remains out of reach. Since the beginning of russia’s full-scale invasion, over 19,546 Ukrainian children have been illegally deported to russia, Belarus, or russian-occupied Ukrainian territory. Some were taken from orphanages, while others were separated from their parents under false pretenses. Many have been adopted into russian families, renamed, and told they are no longer Ukrainian. What happens when a child’s name, language, and past are taken from them? Bring Kids Back UA

Get Ready for Black Cloud – A Ukrainian Art Installation Heading to Burning Man 2025

“This is not a decoration—it is a signal. This is a conversation that needs to be started before it's too late." — Oleksiy Sai, installation artist behind Black Cloud On June 7th, in Kyiv’s historic Sophia Square, a large, ominous black cloud was unveiled, evoking imagery that many Ukrainians were already familiar with witnessing. People passing by remarked on how the cloud reminded them of an explosion and destruction. This art piece, created by contemporary artist, Oleksiy Sai, alongside a team of other artists, producers, and musicians, was meant to feel reminiscent of the horrors of warfare. Black Cloud, also known as Get Ready, blends multiple artistic mediums as it emits flashes of light and features music created by Ukrainian Drum and Bass artist Involver. Additionally, alongside music, the cloud features real sounds of Ukrainian warfare such as artillery fire, explosions, drone strikes, and more. According to one of the installation’s producers, Vitaliy Deynega, this piece is not simply a symbol of the destruction occurring in Ukraine, but is also meant to highlight the inevitability of destruction elsewhere in the world. He remarks on how the feeling of hope blinds humanity to imminent danger. The cloud is meant to symbolize the “elephant in the room”, the threat that is already hanging over our heads. Its message is already clear to those who are already familiar with the horrors of warfare, but is important to share for those who mistakenly believe that what is happening in Ukraine couldn’t happen in their home country. This art installation, originally unveiled in Kyiv, will travel across the world to the United States and will be featured at Burning Man, a festival taking place in late August of 2025, and known for highlighting incredible visual art and pioneering feats of self-expression.

Where Children Can Be Children Again: Stories from Ukraine’s Healing Summer Camps

As the war in Ukraine continues, children carry on living through the same harsh realities of war as their adult counterparts. These children are forced to grow up quickly and are robbed of meaningful childhood experiences. Many of them never even get to grow up past childhood, with over 2,520 children killed or injured since the start of russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022.1 Additionally, these children experience pain that many adults have yet to undergo, with the loss of a parental figure affecting over 17,000 children.2 For this purpose, since 2014, Nova Ukraine has partnered with and pledged its support to camps dedicated to psychological recovery for children and families impacted by the war. Attendees of these camps have the opportunity to heal, connect with their peers, learn new life skills, and, most importantly, have fun. One of Nova Ukraine’s longest partners, Motley Racoons, has provided children with a safe place to go on adventures, create new friendships, and unwind away from the realities of war. Founded by Olexander Chub in 2016, this camp was inspired by his own happy childhood memories of camps he attended all through his adolescence. Olexander loved attending these camps in his youth but remarked on the lackluster content and activities provided at these camps. He sought to create a place where children could develop their moral values and independence, as well as knowledge and connection to Ukrainian culture. Thanks to your donations, Motley Racoons has been able to achieve the feat of hosting 215 children of deceased defenders in their camp programs. Camp GOYRA!, partnered with Nova Ukraine, provides children with the opportunity to backpack across the Carpathian Mountains, disconnecting from the digital world and reconnecting with nature and one other. One attendee of camp GOYRA!, twelve-year-old Katya, recounts her experience at the camp positively, as she ran up to an instructor on her last day exclaiming “I didn't even know I could have so much fun!” This joyous account from Katya is even more heartwarming when considering the trials she lived through. Katya is described as a shy girl who initially had trouble talking to other attendees even when it was simply to ask a neighbor at the camp for more space in a shared closet. Confiding to an instructor, she recounted the harrowing experience of a rocket landing near her home in Kherson, smashing windows and injuring her mother. But throughout the program, Katya eventually opened up to new friendships, played board games, and participated in dancing at the last night’s celebration event.

Nova Ukraine Celebrates a Full House for “The Hunters and the Hunted” Musical Reading in New York

On May 29, 2025, the Ukrainian musical The Hunters and the Hunted was presented in a staged reading format at Open Jar Studios on Broadway, New York City. The event drew a full house, underscoring the growing resonance of Ukrainian stories and the global appetite for cultural works that explore themes of resilience, freedom, and historical memory. Based on Ivan Bahrianyi’s novel The Hunters and the Hunted (Tyhrolovy), the musical was written and composed by Kyrylo Beskorovainyi, Anton Humaniuk, and Bohdan Reshetilov. Lisa Rafferty directed the staged reading, which featured an American cast. While the full musical includes 28 songs, the New York reading showcased 11 of them and selected dialogue, with English translations by Anna Halas, Kyrylo Beskorovainyi, and Anton Humaniuk. Ukrainian pianist Ruslan Ramazanov provided live accompaniment. The event was organized in partnership with Nova Ukraine and Razom for Ukraine, and concluded with a 15-minute conversation with the creators and Stew Stewart, Tony Award and two-time Obie Award-winning playwright and performer. Sanctioning russia: New Bill Gains Momentum in Congress as Nova Ukraine Advocates Push for Action

As russia’s war on Ukraine drags on—with no ceasefire in sight—momentum is building in Congress for a sweeping sanctions package aimed at increasing pressure on the Kremlin. The Sanctioning russia Act of 2025 has gained bipartisan traction in the Senate, with over 80 co-sponsors, while the House version has more than 30 backers. Advocacy groups, including Nova Ukraine, are working to amplify public support for this legislation, which they see as a critical tool for holding russia accountable and supporting long-term peace. Why It Matters Over the memorial weekend, Ukraine endured the largest aerial assault since the full-scale invasion began. During three days, russian forces launched approximately 367 drones and missiles across at least 13 regions—including Kyiv, Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, and Odesa. These attacks killed at least 14 civilians, including three children, and left dozens injured, destroying homes, schools, hospitals, and critical infrastructure. The intensity of these strikes has overwhelmed Ukraine’s air defense systems, leaving millions without power, internet, or safe shelter.

Supplying External Fixation Devices to Ukraine With the Help of Patients of Ukraine

Thanks to the constant financial support of Nova Ukraine and with the coordination of our partner Patients of Ukraine, one of Kyiv’s hospitals received external fixation devices that allow for complex orthopedic interventions. Behind each donation is a real person, their pain, their path to recovery, and their faith in life. Dmytro’s story is one of those. “For some time now, I had been walking with a fracture that refused to heal properly. When I reached the rehabilitation stage, the doctors said that I would have to have another surgery — the displacement was significant”. A plate, Nova Ukraine funded, was installed in Dmytro’s hand to fix the bone fragments. This allowed for the elimination of the deformity, stabilization of the position of the bones, and restoration of the function of the hand.

Dear Friends, The humanitarian crisis in Ukraine continues to escalate due to russia’s ongoing aggression. Despite diplomatic efforts to secure peace, russia's relentless attacks on Ukrainian cities have resulted in significant civilian casualties and widespread destruction. UN reports confirm that hundreds of innocent civilians, including many children, have been killed and over 1,300 injured in just the first three months of 2025. Not a single day in March passed without an attack harming civilians. Nearly 13 million people in Ukraine urgently need humanitarian assistance, and more than 10 million have been forced to flee their homes. Families face impossible decisions daily – stay amidst relentless shelling, without reliable access to heat, water, and electricity, or risk everything by fleeing their homes in search of safety.

Nova Ukraine in Davos 2025: Advancing Education and Innovation for Ukraine’s Future

Ukraine isn’t waiting for peace to build its future—it’s building it right now. This was how Nick Bilogorskiy, Nova Ukraine’s Founder, described the nation’s technological progress at “The Power of Innovation: Ukraine’s Key to the Future” panel in Davos, Switzerland, this January. The panel, co-hosted by Nova Ukraine and Razom for Ukraine, focused on how Ukraine’s resilience and creativity are driving global change. Nova Ukraine’s strategic vision has always been focused on education as a path to meaningful innovation. As Nick Bilogorskiy shared: “What fuels this progress is a strong foundation in tech education. I am myself a product of a Ukrainian math school, and at Nova Ukraine, we’ve recognized since 2014 that the flourishing nation relies on education. We’ve championed STEM initiatives to equip young Ukrainians with the tools to solve tomorrow’s problems. We are modernizing classrooms, publishing books, creating STEM resources, and bridging gaps in tech accessibility for women and veterans. The full-scale invasion has disrupted education, leaving two-thirds of children in front-line areas unable to attend school. To address this, Nova Ukraine partnered with the Ministry of Education to provide remote learning opportunities and deliver digital devices, ensuring children can continue learning despite the war.” Ukraine’s innovation—in AI, drone technology, software, and countless other fields—doesn’t only support Ukrainians but provides unprecedented opportunities for the entire global community. Nova Ukraine remains committed to empowering these stories of innovation and determination as we continue building a stronger, more innovative Ukraine. The panel connected Yaroslav Azhnyuk, Founder & CEO of TheFourthLaw.ai, Mariam Naiem, Independent Researcher & Author, and moderator Dora Chomiak, CEO of Razom for Ukraine, for this critical conversation.
