Bay Area aid in Ukraine faces delivery challenges

Plast: In Unity is Strength

Plast Ukraine, in partnership with Nova Ukraine, has been distributing vital supplies, medicine and support to the people of Ukraine since war erupted on February 24, 2022. Established in 1911, Plast has noble beginnings, drawing its inspiration from another beloved organization, the Boy Scouts, founded in Great Britain in 1908. Plast’s principles are deeply rooted in its loyalty to the nation of Ukraine and an inherent philosophy of service to others. We took some moments to ask Plast more about its beginnings and how the organization has navigated the difficult road of providing lifesaving necessities to those who need it most. NOVA UKRAINE: Plast has a long history of serving the community with active organizations in over 24 countries. The world has observed the bravery and dedication of Ukrainian citizens and their passion to preserve Ukraine’s culture and identity. Could it be Plast’s scouting influence has permeated the country’s citizens, young and old. PLAST: Of course! Plast, as an organization, was founded in difficult times for Ukraine. In 1911-1912, Ukrainian statehood was influenced by Russia and Poland, and none of these countries were interested in preserving or developing Ukrainian organizations, such as Plast. However, Ukrainian centrism and Ukrainian values allowed Plast’s people to protect their language and culture and pass it on to their descendants. Loyalty to Ukraine, despite all disagreements, is at the heart of the oath of allegiance to the Scouts. NOVA UKRAINE: How has Plast been able to organize and respond to the call for emergency humanitarian aid?

Ukraine continues battling the aggressor and inflicting heavy damage on land, in the air and on the seas, as well as diplomatically. Support for Ukraine from democratic countries on four continents has grown and improved qualitatively. To do our part, Nova Ukraine raised over $15M in monetary donations as of April 11, 2022, and spent $12.4M. As of this week, we have shipped over 65 metric tons of medical supplies to Ukraine, of which 25 tons were donated by the medical community. As the war continues with no end in sight, Nova Ukraine is shifting from crisis response to sustained operations, with a renewed emphasis on providing basic supplies, refugee support, and psychological services for the survivors of the horrors inflicted by Russian occupiers. As the war enters its second month, your support is more critical than ever. Analysts predict that Ukraine is in for a long battle, and so are we. Generators Delivered to Chernihiv at a Heavy Cost

In the ongoing war in Ukraine, Russian shelling consistently targets civilian infrastructure, including critical objects like power plants and electrical facilities. As a result, power banks, generators and other power sources are some of the most critical items in besieged cities where active fighting is taking place. Nova Ukraine has purchased 17 gas-powered generators which have been delivered from Cherkasy to Chernihiv General Hospital where electricity and heat are currently out. Our volunteers had to transport the generators across the Desna river by boat, because all the bridges in the area have been destroyed. Sadly, while delivering these generators to Chernihiv, one of the vehicles in the convoy was hit and destroyed by Russian troops killing two volunteers. The very next day, 5 other evacuation vans were again targeted by Russian missiles in continued attacks on aid workers. A young woman who was driving one of the buses was killed, while others were severely injured. The volunteers who delivered our generators were trapped in the besieged city of Chernihiv until Russian forces were pushed from the area. Nova Ukraine team is heartbroken for the brave volunteers who lost their lives undertaking the dangerous task of bringing life saving supplies to Chernihiv, for their loved ones who mourn them, as well as for the citizens of Chernihiv who were trapped under heavy shelling with no capability to get additional supplies to them. Nova Ukraine is highly concerned with volunteer safety. We compare known threats to our volunteers' delivery routes and we require that emergencies are reported to us, in addition to the regular delivery reports. Thankfully, access to the region was restored by Ukrainian troops and we can continue our supply deliveries to Chernihiv. We take every measure possible to keep our volunteers safe despite operating in an active war zone.
