Nevada Doctor Collects Medical Supplies for Ukraine

It takes a village to collect more than 350,000 dollars’ worth of medical supplies and equipment and then deliver it to a hospital in Ukraine. A global village, that is, comprised of a compassionate community in southern Nevada, Nova Ukraine, and a dedicated surgeon who never takes no for an answer. When the war in Ukraine broke out, Las Vegas surgeon Linda Halderman felt helpless that she could not use her medical skills to heal the wounded in Ukraine. “It was very difficult for me to watch knowing that I can stop a hemorrhage and that 90 percent of war injuries that take lives are hemorrhage injuries,” she said. “I wanted to be there on the scene to help." Mission: Supply Ukraine She made inquiries, but soon realized that without a military background she could not be of much help in the warzone. But by collecting medical supplies for hospitals on the frontlines she could help many more people than by applying tourniquets to the wounded herself.

Sterilization of animals may not seem like a top priority in a war zone, but controlling the proliferation of homeless animals is in fact becoming more important now than ever before. That’s why Nova Ukraine is supporting a pilot program in Odesa that provides free sterilization procedures for dogs and cats.Spaying and neutering animals is the most humane way to prevent the the number of homeless animals from increasing while also continuing to care for those already in shelters. It is much easier to maintain quality care for dogs and cats if the population remains relatively stable. Curbing the birth rate frees up available resources, prevents the spread of disease, makes communities safer, and provides for longer and healthier lives for these animals. A crisis of care for homeless animals Requests for shelter care have increased dramatically since the start of the war. Although an increase in such requests is typical in the spring, this year the number of homeless animals has skyrocketed. More animals are being born in Ukraine right now even as the number of people fleeing the country is going up. Shelters are overcrowded and animals are crammed in the homes of volunteers. Without proper spay and neuter procedures, this situation creates a breeding ground for animals — literally. Moreover, with new puppies and kittens being found every day, it is becoming increasingly difficult to properly quarantine them, which, in turn, creates a health risk for volunteers and other animals already in shelters. Because these animals are not properly fed and kept in overcrowded conditions, they often develop immunity and behavioral problems.

Ukrainian Refugees Arrive in the US

After a long journey through war-torn Ukraine, through multiple temporary stops in Europe and awaiting processing in Mexico City under the Uniting for Ukraine program, refugee families have now received authorization to travel to the United States. Here they will start their new lives in a new land. Sadly many still face an uphill climb: due to a lack of government aid and benefits for Ukrainian refugees, they continue to depend on charitable support for basic needs, housing, and work assistance. Every Ukrainian family in Mexico City has a harrowing tale of escaping the war before seeking safe passage to the United States. Closing the Hub at Mexico City

No sooner did Vladimir land on this continent, along with his wife and five young children, that bad news came from home in Ukraine: one of his brothers had died in the war. Weighed down by grief, Vladimir continued his journey in the new world. He applied for humanitarian parole to enter the United States and was soon approved. But Vladimir did not have enough money to fly his large family to the United States. That’s where Nova Ukraine volunteers came in, raising money to pay for their ticket. Today, Vladimir and his family are getting settled in Sacramento, California. Every Ukrainian family in Mexico City has a harrowing tale of escaping the war before seeking safe passage to the United States. Most of them arrived in Mexico before the border crossing in Tijuana was closed. Once the Uniting for Ukraine program was rolled out, however, Ukrainians in Mexico had to apply for humanitarian parole in Mexico City and wait there while the application was processed instead of being able to cross the border on foot. “The uncertainty of this entire process is the hardest part for the refugees,” says Nadia Rosen, a Nova Ukraine volunteer who flew to Mexico City with her husband to help at the hub. Most of the families who got stuck after the new process was rolled out had no means to fly back to Europe to wait for the authorization to come through. Their only place to stay was the makeshift camp run by volunteers on a dusty field in Mexico’s capital. At the Mexico City hub, refugees slept in large tents, with as many as 40 residents in each tent. They endured the bitter cold nights and hot Mexican days. They have few if any personal belongings and little or no money to support themselves. But these refugees consider these conditions a very small price to pay to bring their children to safety.

Angels of Salvation Evacuate Families from Eastern Ukraine

Her evacuation to safety happened in the nick of time. Liudmyla holds on tight to her infant grandchild as she boards a bus to safety with her daughter, the baby, and her teenage grandson. She recounts how Angels of Salvation, a charity organization funded by Nova Ukraine, picked them up from the embattled village of Svyatohirs’k exactly one hour before a Russian rocket blew up their home to smithereens. “We had already evacuated from Bohorodychne,” Elena recalls. “When the war started we left and came to Svyatohirs’k. And then things became so terrible there that after last night we decided to leave.” Shortly after speaking with volunteers, Elena received news that her house had been hit by a direct rocket strike. If it wasn’t for Angels of Salvation, Liudmyla and her family might not have survived. It’s for the sake of families like hers that the 60 volunteers with Angels of Salvation risk their lives every day, driving to and from areas of active fighting in eastern Ukraine. Since the start of the war, they have evacuated more than 15,000 people and delivered them to safety in cities in central and western Ukraine. The organization does double duty: on their way east they deliver humanitarian aid to local residents: food as well as medicine, household supplies, and mattresses, among others. Driving back west, the volunteers pick up as many people as they can fit in their cars and evacuate them to safety.

See our latest on the ground statistics » Our Impact to Date Jewish Association Runs Camp for Displaced Families Thanks to financial support from Nova Ukraine, the Association of Jewish Communities of Ukraine (Vaad Ukraine) launched a project to support displaced Ukrainian mothers with children — in particular the families of servicemen — who are severely impacted by the war in Ukraine. These families are enjoying a respite from the war in the picturesque Carpathian mountains in western Ukraine. Their stay includes meals, therapy sessions, and a variety of activities for children.

Ukrainian UNMC staff members donate medical supplies to home country

OMAHA, Neb. —Doctors are also on the frontlines of the war in Ukraine, helping people hurt by the violence. A group of UNMC staff is bringing aid to those health care workers on the other side of the world. With the help of the nonprofit Nova Ukraine and donations from colleagues, they've now sent two shipments of urgent medical supplies to a local hospital in Ukraine.

Stanford Students Host Event to Show Support for Ukraine

“At the beginning of the war, we were all very sad didn’t know what to do we were helpless and then, we start to act and a lot of people start helping us, us is helping us a lot of other countries as well,” said Stanford student Kateryna Pistunova. They aimed to show what different organizations have been doing…and create a dialogue about the impact of their efforts. “It’s providing medical supplies its helping at hospitals helping refugees that have come in,” said Rodion Yaryy of the non-profit group Nova Ukraine.

Celebrating the Brave Mothers of Ukraine

In observance of Mother’s Day, we ask you to please take a moment to think of the mothers and children of Ukraine. Many of them will be spending this Mother’s Day in bomb shelters, refugee camps, or in the foreign countries where they fled. Other mothers made the difficult decision to leave their children in the care of relatives so that they may stay in Ukraine to fight or help out in other ways. Nova Ukraine volunteers are working through the holiday to support these families who need our help more than ever. And they need your help, too. One mother’s story helping the needy in Ukraine One of the mothers who inspire us is Elena, a Nova Ukraine volunteer who has been delivering food and other critical supplies to other mothers and children living in Lysychansk, a small city in the area of Luhansk close to active fighting. When the war broke out, Elena jumped in to help mothers in need, often with the help of her 15-year-old daughter. When the bombing in the city escalated, Elena evacuated her family out of the area but she was compelled to support others who were unable to leave. Elena continues to make the journey back to her hometown on a regular basis. When we asked why she continues to do this dangerous work, she quoted The Little Prince: “As they say, you become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed. So knowing that they are still there, I just couldn’t abandon them.”

As the third month of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues, Ukrainians here in the U.S. are still finding new ways to raise awareness. Including a Bay Area-based who is a graphic design student. Native Ukrainian leads shoe drive for Ukraine aid

A local Ukraine-born pharmacist is leading a shoe drive to benefit nonprofit Nova Ukraine, collecting gently used and new shoes of all types and sizes to raise money for essential medical supplies and medications. Bay Area relief groups worry about donor fatigue impacting upcoming events

"Unfortunately we are observing significant donor fatigue, where we were getting more donations at the beginning of the war and now 70 days later we see donations trickling down," said Nick Bilogorskiy, co-chair of the non-profit Nova Ukraine. Bilogorskiy says there is still great suffering and great need for aid to the Ukrainian people. "Every day Ukraine continues to be like a 9/11 in the U.S.," said Bilogorskiy, "I just heard from my native Kharkiv where a friend of mine has lost his parents in a rocket attack and it's deeply tragic, and it's happening every day, and it's not okay."

Bay Area classical music greats come together for Ukraine benefit concert

An array of Bay Area and international luminaries from the classical music world — including world-renowned mezzo-sopranopianist-composer Jake Heggie, conductor Nicole Paiement and members of the San Francisco Symphony — are slated to perform in a concert to benefit Ukraine in the wake of the Russian invasion of that country. Proceeds will go to the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, famed chef and philanthropist José Andrés‘ World Central Kitchen and Nova Ukraine. Dimmock said the goal is to raise $100,000, of which 60% to 70% is already in hand.

Nova Ukraine Running Team at Bay to Breakers 2022

Nova Ukraine is joining the Bay to Breakers race in an effort to support Ukrainians impacted by Russian aggression. All money raised will go towards providing desperately needed humanitarian aid in Ukraine, including critical medical supplies, food deliveries, safe evacuations, and assistance to displaced families with children. On Sunday, May 15, Nova Ukraine’s team of 15 runners will start in the Embarcadero neighborhood by the San Francisco Bay and run through nine of the city’s neighborhoods. The event starts at Golden Gate Park (47th Avenue and JFK Boulevard) at 7:30 a.m. Every step of the race will go towards helping thousands of people devastated by the war. These include the needy in dozens of destroyed cities and villages of Ukraine, displaced people throughout the country, and refugees in Ukraine and abroad. “With this run I want to convert our energy into kindness” says Nick Bilogorskiy, co-founder of Nova Ukraine. “Our message is simple: One step equals one dollar for Ukraine. Just imagine: with two dollars our charity can cover a hot meal for a refugee, ten dollars feed a family for a few days. And 70 dollars can save a Ukrainian life via a fully-equipped first aid kit.” Nova Ukraine is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing humanitarian aid to the people of Ukraine, raising awareness about Ukraine, and strengthening Ukraine's democratic society. “All my thoughts are with my parents and with those who suffer in Ukraine because of the cruel Russian war against our country,” says Oleksandrd Skorokhod, Nova Ukraine’s team leader for the event and Ukrainian trail running vice champion in 2021. “The funds raised by the Nova Ukraine’s running team will help save lives and improve the lives of those in distress in Ukraine.”
