Evacuating Families From Eastern Ukraine

The residents of Donetsk and Luhansk are no strangers to war. These eastern regions of Ukraine have been a focal point of active fighting and continuous skirmishes for the last eight years, after Russia first invaded and illegally annexed Crimea. Ever since it has attempted to do the same to the entire eastern part of Ukraine. But residents have not seen this level of all-out war or experienced this level of shelling of civilian targets until now. Today, your donations support critical humanitarian aid and life-saving evacuations in these front-line cities. Her evacuation to safety happened in the nick of time. Liudmyla holds on tight to her infant grandchild as she boards a bus to safety with her daughter, the baby, and her teenage grandson. She recounts how Angels of Salvation, a volunteer organization funded by Nova Ukraine, picked them up from the embattled village of Svyatohirs’k just one hour before a Russian rocket blew up their home to smithereens. “We had already evacuated from Bohorodychne,” Liudmyla says. “When the war started we left and came to Svyatohirs’k. And then things became so terrible there that after last night we decided to leave.” Shortly after speaking with volunteers, Liudmyla received news that her house had been hit by a direct rocket strike and completely destroyed. If it wasn’t for Angels of Salvation, Liudmyla and her family might not have survived. It’s for the sake of families like hers that the 60 volunteers with Angels of Salvation risk their lives every day, driving to and from areas of active fighting in eastern Ukraine. Since the start of the war, they have evacuated more than 15,000 people and delivered them to safety in cities in central and western Ukraine. With your continued support, Angels of Salvation can continue to save the lives of families like Liudmyla’s.

We have evacuated over 20,000 Ukrainians

Nova Ukraine’s footprint of humanitarian assistance stretches across continents: from the embattled regions of eastern Ukraine to Kyiv, from Mexico City to San Francisco. To date, we have served more than a million hot meals to residents of Ukraine and have surpassed 20,000 evacuations of people and animals from frontline regions of Ukraine, including medically fragile patients. We equipped hospitals with vital medical equipment and funded construction crews to rebuild homes destroyed by the war. We have more than 4,460 volunteers on the ground to help Ukrainians impacted by this cruel war who are risking their lives every day to help those in need. See our latest on the ground statistics » Our Impact to Date Jewish Association Runs Camp for Displaced Families Thanks to financial support from Nova Ukraine, the Association of Jewish Communities of Ukraine (Vaad Ukraine) launched a project to support displaced Ukrainian mothers with children — in particular the families of servicemen — who are severely impacted by the war in Ukraine. These families are enjoying a respite from the war in the picturesque Carpathian mountains in western Ukraine. Their stay includes meals, therapy sessions, and a variety of activities for children.

Celebrating the Brave Mothers of Ukraine

In observance of Mother’s Day, we ask you to please take a moment to think of the mothers and children of Ukraine. Many of them will be spending this Mother’s Day in bomb shelters, refugee camps, or in the foreign countries where they fled. Other mothers made the difficult decision to leave their children in the care of relatives so that they may stay in Ukraine to fight or help out in other ways. Nova Ukraine volunteers are working through the holiday to support these families who need our help more than ever. And they need your help, too. One mother’s story helping the needy in Ukraine One of the mothers who inspire us is Elena, a Nova Ukraine volunteer who has been delivering food and other critical supplies to other mothers and children living in Lysychansk, a small city in the area of Luhansk close to active fighting. When the war broke out, Elena jumped in to help mothers in need, often with the help of her 15-year-old daughter. When the bombing in the city escalated, Elena evacuated her family out of the area but she was compelled to support others who were unable to leave. Elena continues to make the journey back to her hometown on a regular basis. When we asked why she continues to do this dangerous work, she quoted The Little Prince: “As they say, you become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed. So knowing that they are still there, I just couldn’t abandon them.”

Helping Hand Rebuilding in Bucha

Economic and military support extended by democratic countries to Ukraine shifted to a higher gear this week. Country leaders, the U.S. secretaries of state and defense, and even the UN Secretary-General visited Kyiv. The U.S. Congress approved the Lend-Lease Act of 2022, which will leverage the American industrial might to support Ukraine's defense efforts. Forty defense ministers met at the Ramstein air base in Germany to coordinate their support of Ukraine. Heavy weapons from the U.S. started arriving in Ukraine. Canada's House of Commons recognized Russia's genocide of the Ukrainian people. President Biden proposed a new $33B Ukraine aid package. Japan is tripling its aid to Ukraine. At the same time, fears mount that Russia's war may reach past the borders of Ukraine and into Moldova. Rather than simply trying to save Ukraine's independence, democratic countries are now helping Ukraine to win the war and remain a viable economy. We at Nova Ukraine are doing our part by helping the people of Ukraine: supporting refugees, funding and shipping medical supplies, delivering food under bombardment, and restoring basic infrastructure. But the damage caused by Russian troops has already been severe, and the road to rebuild will be a long one. Our Impact To Date This week we are adding a new and important category to our spending: Infrastructure. This includes generators, building materials, and equipment to start clearing the debris left behind by Russian shelling and to restore essential services to liberated towns.

Helping Ukrainian Refugees in the US and Beyond

Despite active fighting, frequent missile attacks, and ongoing destruction, Ukraine is becoming stronger, and the aggressor is becoming weaker. The heroic defense of Mariupol continues, while western military aid has improved qualitatively and quantitatively. However, the war is taking a heavy toll on civilians. Over 5 million Ukrainian refugees are now in Europe, tens of thousands are making it into the US, while millions remain internally displaced in Ukraine. The need for humanitarian aid is growing quickly, and Nova Ukraine continues to provide food, medicine and services to the people of Ukraine. Unfortunately, we and other nonprofits helping Ukraine are seeing considerable donor fatigue, and we cannot fund many worthwhile proposals that we receive. Your continued support in funding our projects in Ukraine is essential. Our Impact To Date Our spending to date by category is summarized below:

Plast: In Unity is Strength

Plast Ukraine, in partnership with Nova Ukraine, has been distributing vital supplies, medicine and support to the people of Ukraine since war erupted on February 24, 2022. Established in 1911, Plast has noble beginnings, drawing its inspiration from another beloved organization, the Boy Scouts, founded in Great Britain in 1908. Plast’s principles are deeply rooted in its loyalty to the nation of Ukraine and an inherent philosophy of service to others. We took some moments to ask Plast more about its beginnings and how the organization has navigated the difficult road of providing lifesaving necessities to those who need it most. NOVA UKRAINE: Plast has a long history of serving the community with active organizations in over 24 countries. The world has observed the bravery and dedication of Ukrainian citizens and their passion to preserve Ukraine’s culture and identity. Could it be Plast’s scouting influence has permeated the country’s citizens, young and old. PLAST: Of course! Plast, as an organization, was founded in difficult times for Ukraine. In 1911-1912, Ukrainian statehood was influenced by Russia and Poland, and none of these countries were interested in preserving or developing Ukrainian organizations, such as Plast. However, Ukrainian centrism and Ukrainian values allowed Plast’s people to protect their language and culture and pass it on to their descendants. Loyalty to Ukraine, despite all disagreements, is at the heart of the oath of allegiance to the Scouts. NOVA UKRAINE: How has Plast been able to organize and respond to the call for emergency humanitarian aid?

Supporting Factories In Ukraine

Ukraine continues battling the aggressor and inflicting heavy damage on land, in the air and on the seas, as well as diplomatically. Support for Ukraine from democratic countries on four continents has grown and improved qualitatively. To do our part, Nova Ukraine raised over $15M in monetary donations as of April 11, 2022, and spent $12.4M. As of this week, we have shipped over 65 metric tons of medical supplies to Ukraine, of which 25 tons were donated by the medical community. As the war continues with no end in sight, Nova Ukraine is shifting from crisis response to sustained operations, with a renewed emphasis on providing basic supplies, refugee support, and psychological services for the survivors of the horrors inflicted by Russian occupiers. As the war enters its second month, your support is more critical than ever. Analysts predict that Ukraine is in for a long battle, and so are we. Generators Delivered to Chernihiv at a Heavy Cost

In the ongoing war in Ukraine, Russian shelling consistently targets civilian infrastructure, including critical objects like power plants and electrical facilities. As a result, power banks, generators and other power sources are some of the most critical items in besieged cities where active fighting is taking place. Nova Ukraine has purchased 17 gas-powered generators which have been delivered from Cherkasy to Chernihiv General Hospital where electricity and heat are currently out. Our volunteers had to transport the generators across the Desna river by boat, because all the bridges in the area have been destroyed. Sadly, while delivering these generators to Chernihiv, one of the vehicles in the convoy was hit and destroyed by Russian troops killing two volunteers. The very next day, 5 other evacuation vans were again targeted by Russian missiles in continued attacks on aid workers. A young woman who was driving one of the buses was killed, while others were severely injured. The volunteers who delivered our generators were trapped in the besieged city of Chernihiv until Russian forces were pushed from the area. Nova Ukraine team is heartbroken for the brave volunteers who lost their lives undertaking the dangerous task of bringing life saving supplies to Chernihiv, for their loved ones who mourn them, as well as for the citizens of Chernihiv who were trapped under heavy shelling with no capability to get additional supplies to them. Nova Ukraine is highly concerned with volunteer safety. We compare known threats to our volunteers' delivery routes and we require that emergencies are reported to us, in addition to the regular delivery reports. Thankfully, access to the region was restored by Ukrainian troops and we can continue our supply deliveries to Chernihiv. We take every measure possible to keep our volunteers safe despite operating in an active war zone.

32 Tons of Medical Supplies Flown to Ukraine

Airbus A330 cargo flight with $3.5 million worth of emergency medical supplies organized by Nova Ukraine in partnership with the Ukrainian Student Association at Stanford University and the Ukrainian Association of Washington State (UAWS) took off from the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) and landed in Lublin, Poland on March 29th. Background Spurred by the need to help Ukraine, a group of Stanford students convinced the hospital to donate several pallets of medical supplies. This effort evolved into a fundraiser to finance a medical relief flight. Stanford students turned to the community for additional medical supply donations and funding for a charter flight. Nova Ukraine stepped in to finance the charter flight and act as NGO partner for the fundraiser. Then the Seattle-area Ukrainian American community got involved through Liliya Kovalenko, president of the Ukrainian Association of Washington. Stanford students sorted and helped package over 32 tons of donated supplies. The Ministry of Health in Ukraine was contacted to receive and distribute the supplies. Contents of the Air Cargo
