When the Lights Go Out, Childhood Shouldn’t Have To

When the grid went down, the generators on site weren’t strong enough to power the building. Heating failed. The shelter went cold. Students who should have been in class were logging on remotely instead — if they could log on at all. This winter will be different.

Five Kilometers from the Front, One Month Without Power

There is a place in eastern Ukraine, roughly five kilometers from the front line, where the electricity has been gone for a month. The wounded keep arriving. The medics keep working. And the lights stay on, because of a generator.

Carefree laughter echoing across the mountains. Summer camps have just wrapped up their programs as the school season begins.

Nova Ukraine funded a professional development course for camp counselors and professionals working with children and teens, implemented by our partner TolerSpace.

The 28-hour online course covered age-specific needs and the impact of war, trauma-informed approaches, conflict resolution, discipline without punishment, educational planning, team care, and burnout prevention. In total, 48 participants completed the training.

Investing in the people who support children through challenges that are both unique to wartime and familiar to childhood everywhere is what makes this work stronger.

🇺🇸🇺🇦 IT’S OFFICIAL.

Today, September 18, the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 was signed into law, marking the first major bipartisan legislation supporting Ukraine to become law in more than two years.

“This legislation matters because it goes after the resources that allow Russia to continue its war – its financial and defense networks, its shadow fleet and sanctions evasion. Equally important, the passage demonstrates that support for holding Russia accountable can still command bipartisan support in Washington. We know that sanctions are not a magic bullet, but they will raise the cost to Putin and reduce Russia’s ability to finance this war. That's success!” said Ambassador Erin E. McKee, CEO of Nova Ukraine.

In Ukraine, giving birth can happen during air-raid sirens, power outages, and attacks on hospitals. In frontline regions, doctors are reporting premature birth rates roughly twice the national average.

For the smallest patients, every second matters.

A new portable ultrasound machine provided by Nova Ukraine starts in just 20 seconds and is now helping doctors care for newborns at the Clinical Perinatal Center of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Sumy.

🇺🇸🇺🇦 THE LEGENDARY 9TH UKRAINE ACTION SUMMIT!

It ended with the passage of the Russia sanctions bill, one of the top advocacy priorities for delegates from across the United States.

Twice a year, the American Coalition for Ukraine, which Nova Ukraine is proud to have co-founded, brings people together in Washington for the Ukraine Action Summit to advocate for Ukraine in Congress.

This is American democracy in action: everyone has the right to speak with their lawmakers. And delegates use that opportunity to urge them to vote in support of Ukraine.

This Summit is proof that advocacy works.

So join us for the next Ukraine Action Summit in spring 2027!
