Support Ukraine in the Face of Historical and Current Oppression

Support Ukraine in the Face of Historical and Current Oppression

By Sofiia Tiapkina

As Ukraine commemorates the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor genocide, we see history painfully repeating itself. russia’s brutal war in Ukraine makes the echoes of the past resonate in the present, as Ukraine battles not only for its survival but also for the preservation of its national identity. The haunting similarities between the Stalinist methods during the Holodomor and those employed by Putin in the ongoing war underscore the urgent need for global support.

The 1932-1933 Holodomor genocide remains a painful chapter in Ukrainian history. The Soviet authorities ordered the collectivization of agriculture, placing impossibly high grain quotas on the Ukrainian peasant farmers. When these quotas proved unattainable, the regime increased its efforts to seize every last bit of grain. The result was a manufactured famine that claimed the lives of millions of Ukrainians. At the same time, the USSR repressed Ukrainian culture, targeting writers and cultural leaders who spoke up about Holodomor – decades of forced silence followed as the USSR denied the terror famine.

Ninety years have passed, and Ukraine is once again fighting for its right to exist. The russian regime is subjecting the Ukrainian civilians to shelling, hunger, cold, and deportations. russia is directly employing Stalinist tactics of the Holodomor and stealing Ukrainian grain to gain revenue for putin’s war machine. Satellites have tracked russia’s smuggling of over 15 million tons of Ukrainian grain from the temporarily occupied regions of Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, and Luhansk. The goal remains the same — to starve Ukrainians, obliterate their statehood, and continue the cycle of silence and violence. The stark parallels between historical oppression and the ongoing war highlight Ukrainians’ endurance in the face of adversity.

In this critical moment, the global community must rally behind Ukraine. The echoes of the Holodomor serve as a forceful reminder that indifference to the suffering of a nation sets a dangerous precedent that undermines the very fabric of global peace and security. In our interconnected world, russia’s war is exacerbating global hunger and food instability, spreading famine and terror. It is incumbent upon us to advocate for the sovereignty of Ukraine, denounce russia’s food weaponization, and support the civilians as the harsh winter draws near. The international community must stand united here and now.

Let us recognize the significance of national memory and stand with the Ukrainian people in their pursuit of independence and justice. Together, we can ensure that history does not repeat itself and that Ukraine emerges as a free and sovereign nation.
