Floodwaters Devastate Dozens of Towns in Ukraine

On June 6, parts of the Kherson region in Southern Ukraine were devastated by floodwaters from the Kakhovka dam, and the region is now facing a “monumental humanitarian, economic, and ecological catastrophe.”

Families, including children and the elderly, sought refuge on rooftops, watching their lives being swept away. The scale of this crisis is immense and one of the most significant challenges Ukraine has faced during the 15-month invasion by Russia.

To ensure an effective response, Nova Ukraine joined forces with the Consulate General of Ukraine in San Francisco (for media and information support) and the Emergency Services of Ukraine for local coordination in Kherson.

A Nova Ukraine team and several of our partner teams reached Kherson the next day, June 7, 2023. Thanks to your generous donations:

Nova Ukraine funded critical aid and evacuations of Kherson residents, people and their animals (donate to help animals).

We also funded, purchased, and delivered essential supplies and equipment, such as water pumps and pipes, to address the devastating damages caused by extreme flooding.

Help us to continue supporting first responders near Kherson!

The region still lacks basic resources like clean water, food, and medicine! The situation is changing as flooding starts to recede, exposing devastation previously hidden from our eyes. Fungal growth and the risk of infectious diseases are rising, whereas urban cleanup and building repairs will be starting soon, despite artillery shelling by the occupiers from across the Dnieper.

Training ENT Surgeons in Acoustic Trauma

Author Matt Salter Nova Ukraine is dedicating funds to a vital and often underserved medical necessity in conflict areas: acoustic trauma. In partnership with Pivnyk Charitable Foundation, this new program will train Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) doctors in Ukraine to treat hearing loss and ear injuries. Why Hearing Restoration Is Critical An estimated 60% of people injured in combat zones suffer acoustic trauma, hearing loss, or both. Ukrainian troops and civilians throughout the country suffer acoustic injuries. Without proper treatment, the pain and sensory loss of such injuries can last a lifetime.
Aprons shield vital organs and bone marrow from radiation exposure. Collars protect the thyroid gland, which is sensitive to excessive radiation. Both are vital in long-term X-ray use. In addition to providing improved safety through the procedure, protective gear allows for more detailed imaging, which makes for improved diagnosis, better treatment, and healthier patients. Tools like these go beyond the current crisis: they are reliable and reusable, suitable for the long-term use that forms the foundation of resilient healthcare systems. Equipping Doctors for Safer Diagnosis

Author Matt Salter Nova Ukraine’s latest investment in strong, modern healthcare systems has arrived! Lviv First Medical Association has received a shipment of protective X-ray aprons and collars. These tools keep patients and caregivers safe during procedures requiring X-ray imaging, empowering healthcare workers to give patients top-quality diagnosis, treatment, and care. The new aprons and collars protect patients and healthcare workers from X-ray overexposure in video urodynamics, the process of identifying and treating potentially deadly issues of the urinary system and bladder. It calls for specialists to stay by a patient’s side from the beginning of the imaging process to the end of the procedure. Long-term, hands-on care like this produces the best outcomes, but without protective gear, it risks exposing patients and doctors to dangerous levels of radiation. With the new gear, doctors in Ukraine can deliver best-in-class diagnosis and treatment, improving current and future outcomes across the national healthcare system.

20,000 teddy bears blanketed the California Capitol Monday. Why they were there

The installation, called “Bring Kids Back,” made its Sacramento debut as part of an ongoing campaign to draw attention to the thousands of children and support international efforts for their return. It was displayed on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., and in Los Angeles earlier this year. “I think everybody can agree that stealing children is an atrocity and should not be happening in this day and age,” said Aleksandr Krapivkin, director of advocacy and engagement at Nova Ukraine and one of the event moderators. “If we don’t want this to ever happen again — not only in Ukraine, but … to any nation, then we have to take action now.” The focal point of the installation were the teddy bears, which hung from fence panels and formed the message “Putin abducted 20,000 Ukrainian children. Bring Kids Back.”
