ENSEMBLE CHERUBIM led by MARIKA KUZMA PRESENT ECHOES FROM UKRAINE:
an immersive experience of music and poetry
joined by actors L. Peter Callender, Joy Carlin, and Patrick Russell
Sunday June 12, 2022, 2:30-3:30
part of the Berkeley Festival and Exhibition of Early Music

At this moment, Ukraine is very much in the hearts, minds, and attention of the global community. The 20-voice Ensemble Cherubim led by the critically acclaimed Marika Kuzma will share a rich, deeply-rooted legacy of Ukrainian music celebrating the existence of a vibrant, distinct Ukrainian culture. There is so much more to Ukraine than the current images of devastation.
The singers will perform chant from the ancient monasteries of Kyiv, folk hymns from Ukrainian villages, and choral concertos from majestic cathedrals. Esteemed Bay Area actors will speak powerful
verses from modern Ukrainian poets to bring this music from the past into the present moment. The concert will also include visual images of the varied Ukrainian landscape. It is presented as part of the
Berkeley Festival and in partnership with Nova Ukraine and the Consulate of Ukraine of San Francisco.
For audiences of all ages interested in global music, choral music, early music, poetry, cultural history, Ukraine. This event will be a creative melding of music–poetry–theater.
