Equipping Doctors for Safer Diagnosis

Aprons shield vital organs and bone marrow from radiation exposure. Collars protect the thyroid gland, which is sensitive to excessive radiation. Both are vital in long-term X-ray use. In addition to providing improved safety through the procedure, protective gear allows for more detailed imaging, which makes for improved diagnosis, better treatment, and healthier patients. Tools like these go beyond the current crisis: they are reliable and reusable, suitable for the long-term use that forms the foundation of resilient healthcare systems. Nova Ukraine, through our HEAL pillar, is dedicated to providing Ukrainian doctors, medics, nurses, and other healthcare professionals with the tools they need to build strong and lasting healthcare infrastructure across the country.

Nova Ukraine’s latest investment in strong, modern healthcare systems has arrived! Lviv First Medical Association has received a shipment of protective X-ray aprons and collars. These tools keep patients and caregivers safe during procedures requiring X-ray imaging, empowering healthcare workers to give patients top-quality diagnosis, treatment, and care.

Equipping Doctors for Safer Diagnosis

The new aprons and collars protect patients and healthcare workers from X-ray overexposure in video urodynamics, the process of identifying and treating potentially deadly issues of the urinary system and bladder. It calls for specialists to stay by a patient’s side from the beginning of the imaging process to the end of the procedure.

Long-term, hands-on care like this produces the best outcomes, but without protective gear, it risks exposing patients and doctors to dangerous levels of radiation. With the new gear, doctors in Ukraine can deliver best-in-class diagnosis and treatment, improving current and future outcomes across the national healthcare system.

Michigan Senate Takes a Stand on Abducted Ukrainian Children

LANSING, MI—The Michigan State Senate yesterday unanimously passed a bipartisan resolution (SR 141) condemning the abduction and forced deportation of Ukrainian children by the Russian Federation. Nova Ukraine, Yoopers for Ukraine, and other community groups played a significant role in passing the resolution. Nova Ukraine applauds Michigan State Senators Chang (D) and McBroom (R) for introducing the resolution, and we look forward to its upcoming introduction in the Michigan House. While a similar resolution has passed at the federal level, Michigan is now the sixth state to act. This initiative signals a growing movement across the United States to recognize and respond to Russia’s war crimes against children. Dr. Igor Markov, Board Director of Nova Ukraine, said:

How Pétanque is Helping Ukraine’s Veterans Build a League of Their Own On September 19-20, Lviv’s Stryiskyi Park transformed into a full-blown sports arena, with Ukrainian flags snapping overhead, families and coaches packed along the sidelines, and veteran support groups cheering from the edges of 25 specially built gravel lanes. This was the Grand Final of the 2026 All-Ukrainian Veterans Pétanque League: the year’s fourth and decisive tournament, and by far the biggest. 50 veteran teams, including 165 competitors, from 20 cities across Ukraine, came to compete hard and stand shoulder to shoulder with others who understand exactly what they’ve been through. Organized by our partner NGO Marlog-Caducei, supported by Nova Ukraine, the Ministry of Veterans Affairs and the Lviv City Council, the tournament drew record crowds, as the trophy was captured by the Lviv team, Nezlamni, Nasha Gryae. Rough translation: Unbreakable. We Play. It’s easy to smile at that name and move on. But stick around.

From Eco Picnic to Eco Film Festival

With Nova Ukraine’s support for the second year in a row, Ukrainian nonprofit Chysto.De?!—whose name translates as “Clean.Where?!”—is expanding environmental education and creating new opportunities for Ukrainian eco-cinema. At this year’s ECO FILM FESTIVAL, organized by Chysto.De?! on August 15–16 at MC6 Creative Residence in Slavske, visitors watched Ukrainian and international environmental documentaries, attended lectures and public discussions, joined hands-on workshops, and explored a market of sustainable local crafts. Children and teenagers spent the weekend learning the basics of documentary storytelling, filming nature around them, experimenting with stop-motion animation, and presenting their own short films at the closing ceremony. For Nova Ukraine project manager Yevheniya Chuchko, it was the part of the festival that stayed with her most.
