WASHINGTON–Just days after the 8th Ukraine Action Summit brought more than 700 pro-Ukraine advocates from all 50 states and Puerto Rico to Washington, D.C., lawmakers from both parties have introduced two important bills holding Russia accountable for its actions.
In the Senate, Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) introduced the No Oil Profits for Enemies (NOPE) Act, which would restore Congressional oversight of U.S. sanctions on Russia and prevent Putin’s regime from profiting off ongoing hostilities with Iran.
And in the House and Senate, a bipartisan group of lawmakers introduced the Countering Russia’s War on Faith Act, which would require the Secretaries of State and Defense to report on Russian efforts “to persecute, suppress, discriminate, or otherwise violate the religious freedoms of Ukraine and temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.” It also calls for the President to sanction Russians involved in religious persecution.

And the Countering Russia’s War on Faith Act is an important acknowledgment that Russia isn’t just waging a war in Ukraine. It’s conducting an erasure of a people, their cities, and the sacred places that hold their identity.”
