Education in Ukraine

Navigating Challenges During the Ongoing russian Invasion

The ongoing war in Ukraine has had an extensive and profound impact on children, affecting their physical safety, mental health, education, and overall well-being.

Millions of children have been displaced, both internally and across borders, often separating family members and increasing risks of trafficking, exploitation, and abuse. Some children are forced to live in bomb shelters for extended periods, disrupting their daily lives and causing immense stress.

Back to School with Hope

The war has undermined children’s education. Thousands of schools have been damaged or destroyed, disrupting the education of millions. Nearly one million children are unable to attend in-person learning, with over 3,790 educational facilities affected. In Kharkiv, for example, only 2 out of 700 schools deliver in-person learning, with most children studying online or in makeshift underground schools. This disruption affects children’s academic progress, social development, and mental well-being.

Additionally, russia deliberately demolished a third of Ukraine’s energy generation capacity. Extended blackouts have become a daily challenge due to persistent air strikes on the power grids, hampering remote access to education.

Support Education in Ukraine

At Nova Ukraine, we are dedicated to ensuring access to quality and safe education for all Ukrainian children, especially during these challenging times. Our focus is on orphans, children from large families, low-income families, internally displaced families, and children with chronic illnesses. We are committed to creating educational opportunities that foster resilience, knowledge, and HOPE for the future.

Learn About Nova Ukraine’s Latest Educational Projects

Supporting STEM Education

Since 2014, Nova Ukraine has funded numerous STEM classes, summer camps, and vocational training. In 2023 alone, we supported these projects with $600,000 and aim to double our impact in 2024.

Due to the lack of educational resources in Ukrainian, we plan to translate and publish several dozen popular science books and videos in Ukrainian for children and young adults aged 10-17.

We strive to ensure that schoolchildren have access to quality STEM education materials, nurturing their curiosity and potential.

The Zmistovno Project

In partnership with the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, we have opened 50 after-school educational centers across Ukraine. These centers offer Blended Learning, combining in-person and virtual classes in physics, mathematics, natural sciences, IT, robotics, and more.

Since June 2024, over 515,000 children have benefited from these vibrant learning communities.

Supporting Reconstruction Needs for Schools in Mykolaiv

To ensure the safe reopening of a school in Mykolaiv for in-person education, we are constructing a bomb shelter. This initiative will safeguard over 1,300 students. At the Mykolaiv Boarding School, which accommodates children with special health needs, including cardiovascular conditions, we are installing a ventilation system in the shelter.

This improvement is essential for the health and safety of over 500 children and the internally displaced persons residing there, allowing the school to resume in-person classes safely.
