In Ukraine\, musicians pushed against the state-sanctioned sound. Blending Ukrainian musical traditions with funk\, rock\, and contemporary global influences\, these musicians created a sound that was original\, modern\, and far more adventurous than Soviet cultural authorities intended. \nThe film features the story of bands including Smerichka\, Berezen\, Dzvony\, Vodohrai\, Mriya\, Svityaz\, Zhyva Voda\, Berkut\, Vizerunky Shliakhiv\, Muzyky\, Kobza\, Arnica\, and many others. \nThe filmmakers coined the term “Mustache Funk” for this musical phenomenon\, a scene that combined Ukrainian musical traditions with contemporary sounds and rhythms while developing inside the restrictions of the Soviet system. \nThe film premiered at the 49th Kyiv International Film Festival Molodist and was later released theatrically in Ukraine. \nProduced by TTM Studio with the support of the State Film Agency of Ukraine and the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine. \nAbout the Film | Trailer  \nTime \n6:30 PM — Doors Open \n7:00 – 8:30 PM — Movie Screening \n9:00 – 9:30 PM — Discussion \nSeating is limited. Against a backdrop of bitterness and vengeance\, a pure and radiant love blossoms between Ivan and Marichka\, who belong to the rival families. Ivan is forced to leave to seek work\, and while he is away\, Marichka perishes in the depths of a river. Ivan tries to forget his beloved\, but cannot. Even marriage to the beautiful Palahna brings no relief. Only in his dying delirium does Ivan find his happiness once more. \nAppearing at the turning point between two Soviet eras — when power in Moscow had already shifted toward reaction\, yet the Ukrainian cinema was still experiencing its “thaw” — Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors became a pivotal event in the development of Ukrainian culture in the second half of the twentieth century. It sparked a dissident scandal at the premiere at the Ukraine cinema\, fueled a prolonged confrontation between directors of the “poetic” school and Soviet censorship\, and ultimately transformed Parajanov’s film into an icon of style for the young cinema of independent Ukraine. \nWhatever the case\, Parajanov’s Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors is an extraordinarily compelling work even beyond its political context — remarkable for its innovative cinematic language and the involvement of nearly half of the key figures of Ukrainian cinema from the 1960s to the 1980s. \nRestored by The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project and Cineteca di Bologna at L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory in collaboration with the Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Centre and in association with the Dovzhenko Film Studio. DESCRIPTION:The Ukrainian Spring Film Marathon returns on April 11\, 2026 with “Checkpoint Zoo.” \nThe evening includes an introductory presentation\, the film screening\, and a post-film discussion and Q&A. \nAbout “Checkpoint Zoo” \nIn the early days of the Russian-Ukrainian war\, Kharkiv\, the country’s second-largest city\, was turned into a warzone. On one side of the battlefield was the invading Russian army; on the other side\, the defending Ukrainians; and caught in between them was a zoo called Feldman Ecopark. \nMore than just a zoo\, Feldman Ecopark was an animal sanctuary that offered countless therapy programs to everyone from soldiers with PTSD to children with special needs. As the war raged on\, and the shelling increased\, it was clear that the bravery of the staff wouldn’t be enough to save the animals trapped inside.  \nWith the help of four young volunteers\, these zookeepers would undertake a seemingly impossible mission – they would risk life and limb to evacuate over 5\,000 animals\, including scores of dangerous predators\, and deliver them to safety. \nDrawing on first-hand footage\, award-winning filmmaker Joshua Zeman’s “Checkpoint Zoo” tells the story of human compassion\, bravery\, and sacrifice during Ukraine’s darkest hours.
