Volunteers from Pekelna Kuhna/ Hell’s Kitchen\, a Ukrainian non-profit organization based in Kharkiv\, will guide us through the preparation of traditional and beloved dishes: deruny (hasbrowns) + baked pumpkin + beetroot salad. The recipes are easy to prepare\, do not require any prior cooking experience\, are low-cost\, and will make a great addition to any (home) menu.\n \nPekelna Kukhnia/ Hell’s Kitchen is a volunteering initiative based in Kharkiv\, the second largest city in Ukraine. Since March 2022\, Pekelna Kukhnia/Hell’s Kitchen has been providing hundreds of meals for those most in need in the city\, which is constantly under the Russian attacks and has been working in the condition of electricity and water shortages. In these dark times globally\, we invite you to extend a gesture of solidarity from your own kitchens to Kharkiv by (virtually) coming together and sharing a meal with us. Afineevsky also pays tribute to the extraordinary character of his fellow citizens\, from a stand-up comedy show which mocks the Russian Army to doctors setting up makeshift sanctuaries to everyday people shouting down Russian soldiers. This is what bravery and resistance look like. \nEXPECTED GUEST: director Evgeny Afineevsky\n\nIsraeli director Evgeny Afineevsky garnered his first filmmaking honor as a teenager when a documentary project he made with a youth club in his native Russia won a prize at a film festival hosted by the Pioneer Camp\, the country’s equivalent to the Boy Scouts. He made his feature debut with a narrative OY VEY! MY SON IS GAY! (2009)\, the winner of several festival awards. He has found his greatest success as a documentary filmmaker where his films include WINTER ON FIRE: UKRAINE’S FIGHT FOR FREEDOM (2009)\, nominated for a Best Documentary Oscar®; PRAY FOR UKRAINE (2015); CRIES FROM SYRIA (2017)\, winner of a Humanitas Award; and FRANCESCO (2020).
