Computers for Ukraine

March 20, 2016 @ 4:00 pm - April 3, 2016 @ 3:00 pm

Nova Ukraine starts the second stage of our project “Computers for Ukraine”. The goal is to collect several hundreds of used but usable computers. We pass this equipment to volunteer groups in Ukraine who help with Internet access and IT education for those in need: children, displaced persons, remote schools, etc. The scale is virtually unlimited.
What we collect:
* desktops and laptops with processor i3 and above (Core2Duo can be considered) with at least 4Gb of memory. Rule of thumb — it should work smoothly with sites like Facebook and Udemy.com
* computer monitors (except old CRT tubes, of course)
* routers and other network equipment
* video projectors
* monetary donations (Paypal to [email protected] with a note “Computers for Ukraine”)
Where to bring your donated computers:
* 2307 Running Water Court, Santa Clara, Michael Simbirsky
* 27754 Miami Ave, Hayward, CA Anna Bietina 510-359-3614
* TBD
How it works:
Our volunteers handle, store, sort and pack the computer donations. We made an arrangement with Sacramento charity Ukraine Relief that they will deliver our equipment to Ukraine.
We have a recipient and a partner — a Ukrainian NGO BrainBasket Foundation (BBF) which works on a project to install computers in dozens of public libraries in Ukraine. It is a big project, 300 working places are being installed at the current stage; they already have 100 computers and we are ready to ship 100 more to them; we are looking for another 100+. Monitors are harder to get and they are particularly needed.
Last but not least we have support from a local recycling company Direct Resource Management, Inc which is certified in all recycling operations including data erasure. It allows us to handle donations from your business or your employer.
How can you help:
1) Spread the word — tell about these efforts to your friends and coworkers. On our side, we promise to publish more details as the project unfold. Please, stay tuned.
2) We are looking for volunteers to receive, collect and store these donations; computers do not take that much place, in fact.
3) It would be fantastic if you can ask for used computer equipment from your employer. Please, do not hesitate to share your experience, both positive and negative. If you are ready to write letters or talk to businesses asking to donate computers you could make a huge impact!
4) Money is always needed. On average we spend about in shipment costs per item. Besides, we use donated money to buy bunches of used computers when price is really good. It allows us to give our NGO partners in Ukraine reliable and homogeneous items and it saves them a lot of efforts in maintaining the computer classes. Roughly each 0 in donation will create extra computer seat in a library in Ukraine.
5) If you work for a large high-tech company, there is a huge chance you can use matching donations from your employer as explained here: https://www.facebook.com/notes/nova-ukraine/how-your-employer-can-help-ukraine/1060294454015939
The results of the first stage (https://www.facebook.com/events/1648127698740455/):
With support from Ukraine Relief we delivered to Ukraine close to 40 workplaces. Our partners for the first stage, ??????? ?????????-????????????? ?????, are about to receive them to install in their computer classes in Kharkiv, Mariupol and several other cities.
